The camp was conducted by the The Bollineni Eye Hospital and Research Centre at Gangapatnam village and Kothur in Indukurpet mandal in the district last week.
Before conducting the surgery, the patients were screened for the presence of several diseases; nearly 30 patients underwent surgeries. A couple of days after the surgery, some patients complained of blurred vision and burning in the eyes.
They were first checked at the Bollineni Hospital in Nellore and then sent to Shankar Nethralaya at Chennai.
From the accounts of attendants of patients, Doctors at the Chennai hospital are not hopeful that patients would get back their vision. Eyeballs of four patients have been removed as a life saving measure. Five others will also undergo a similar surgery for removal of eye balls.
Amid reports of negligence doing the rounds, Chief ophthalmologist N. Sai Murali of the Nellore Hospital cleared the hospital of any negligence. He said, "We are trying to find out how the treatment failed. The hospital management will bear the total expenses and do justice to the victims."
