After incessant delays, medical records of some 50 million patients are finally online in the much delayed IT upgrade in the NHS. The project was due to take off four years ago and has cost the government some £12 billion.
Director of The Patients Association, Katherine Murphy, welcomed the development, but wants patients to be allowed to opt out of the system, "We have heard from patients who have found it is being made increasingly difficult to opt out. That is completely unacceptable," she added.

Dr Grant Ingrams, from the British Medical Association, said the system would make care a safer proposition, "Electronic Summary Care Records have the potential to improve both quality and safety of patient care but it is critical for the programme's success that all patients receive balanced information and are made aware of their option to opt out," he added.
The system is due to go live on Thursday.
