Film Festival on Women Rights Hosted By Kolkata

Kolkata hosted a unique film festival that features gender crimes as a growing global phenomenon at a time when the whole country is galvanised into seeking a safer society for women.

"This film festival is a part of our campaign to mobilize people across the world to come out and be part of the billion people who say we will not take violence against women anymore. So that's why it is called 'one billion rising'," said Anuradha Kapoor, social worker and organiser of the film festival.

Gender Violence on the Rise Due to Changing Roles of Men and Women
A recent study has revealed that gender violence has shown an upward trend owing to the changing roles of men and women.

"One in every three women across the world are either raped or beaten during their lifetime. So, the idea was that now we have to mobilize and bring one billion people out on the streets on February 14, 2013 to say 'Enough! No more'. We are not going to take this violence any more, this violence has to stop," said Kapoor.

"I think that the root cause of all of this violence is the power differential between girls and boys, the fact that men are considered superior to girls. This whole violence is an expression to that power that men have over women," she added.

Kapoor emphasized that the people will have to start bringing up girls without discrimination to stop crimes against women.

Gender Violence Rampant in Madrid, With 200,000 Women Suffering Yearly
Around 200,000 women become the victim of gender violence in Madrid every year, a study has revealed.

"We will have to start teaching boys to respect girls within our homes and there should be no discrimination between girls and boys within our homes then only we can think about a gender sensitive society," she said.

The film festival is part of the global campaign 'One Billion Rising', which was flagged off in November 2012 demanding an end to violence against women.

Gender Discrimination Still Alive at Workplace
Researchers have said that even in today's times, gender discrimination at workplace is very much alive and kicking.

The films screened at the festival will take us into the lives of women in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Iran, Africa, Australia, and South America.
