Fecal Bacterial Contamination Found in Idli, Dosa Ready Mix

The idli or dosa ready available in the market mix might contain bacteria. The presence of bacteria indicates fecal contamination. According to a survey conducted by Concert (Centre for consumer education, research, teaching, training and testing) among 20 local brands in Tamil Nadu, 55% i.e. 11 of the locally available ready mixes are contaminated. This bacterial contamination can lead to health hazards like vomiting, diarrhea and typhoid fever.

This impurity can be attributed to the possible poor hygienic practices while preparing the rice, urad dal and water mixed batter which usually costs around Rs. 20 per kg. The tests were done using Hydrogen Sulphide Spot Test Kits which turns the sample black if it contains hydrogen sulphide containing bacteria (Salmonella). These kits were issued by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board.

Director of Concert, G. Santhanarajan said, "What is unknown is whether these ingredients are of a high standard, or if their handling is hygienic." However the authorities refused to divulge the names of popular brands.
