Father's Presence Makes Labour More Difficult, Says Expert

Leading French obstetrician Michel Odent has said that a father's presence during childbirth makes labour more difficult for the mother.

Leading French obstetrician Michel Odent has said that a father's presence during childbirth makes labour more difficult for the mother. Over the years, fathers have fought for and have been given the right to be present at the birth of their kids unlike in previous times when they saw their child only after the mid-wife brought the child out.

"Having been involved for more than 50 years in childbirths in homes and hospitals in France, England and Africa, the best environment I know for an easy birth is where there is nobody around the women in labour apart from a silent, low-profile and experienced midwife - and no doctor and no husband, nobody else," Dr Odent told the Daily Mail.

He also said that men who witnessed childbirth could lose sexual attraction to their partners and this could damage their relationship.

However Thomas Laws from the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of South Australia said that as families were getting smaller, women could use all the support they get.

"We have a situation where as a society, and from the experience and opinion of health professionals, we allowed fathers to be in the delivery room. I don't think you can say that we should turn history around on the basis of a report," he concluded.
