Families of Girls in
Family members of the girl athletes who attempted suicide last month at a sports hostel in Kerala’s Alappuzha protested on June 3 demanding a CBI probe into the incident.
The kin of the athletes were accompanied by villagers and members of the local council as they raised slogans and marched to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel.

Parent of a victim, Regi, claimed that the SAI was protecting the perpetrators. "We understand that the investigation is being sabotaged. Ever since it began, we thought that it was being misdirected because the investigators tried to tamper with eyewitness accounts. It is being said that the National Human Rights Commission came and questioned everyone. But, the main accused was out of town at that time," said Regi.

The protesters also demanded that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a fair investigation into the matter.

Four women athletes attempted suicide on May 7 at a sports hostel alleging harassment by a trainer. One of them passed away.

The girls ate a poisonous substance in an apparent bid to take their own lives at the SAI hostel.

Relatives of the athletes have also alleged that the girls were being physically and mentally tortured. However, in its report, SAI has ruled out any harassment of the girls.
