Failed Cosmetic Surgery Brought to Court

Marilyn Leisz has been awarded US$115,000 in compensation for a failed cosmetic surgery that has made it impossible to close her eyes. Dr Paul Parker, a cosmetic surgeon in Paramus, New Jersey had undertaken to do corrective surgery in 2005 to undo the damage that earlier cosmetic surgeries had wrought on the woman’s face. A blepharoplasty, an eyelid surgery meant to give a rejuvenated, alert appearance, was carried out, which unfortunately brought about the devastating effect of being unable to close the eyes. Leisz has to use steroid drops and creams to lubricate them and wear a mask over her face at night to prevent scratching her corneas. She says she faces the risk of getting glaucoma and becoming blind.

In his defense, Parker has claimed that with experience of 25 years and more than 10,000 surgical procedures, "We are a reputable practice with a solid track record. This is based on our commitment not only to patient care but to pre-surgical counseling."

But Leisz chose to sue him for malpractice, and now, has even criticized the amount awarded by the court unsuited for the trauma she has to go through and far beneath her expectations of an appropriate compensation. "The award given to me can't anywhere touch what has happened with my eyes."

She is not ready to go through another surgery which might rectify the problem.
