Expatriate Nurses on Visit Visas can Take Up Jobs in UAE

Expatriate nurses who come to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on visit visas can now take up employment.

"We'll allow nurses on visit visas to sit in the nursing examination of the MoH (Ministry of Health), to take up jobs in the private sector," Dr Abul Ghaffar Abdul Ghaffor, assistant under-secretary in the Curative Medicine Department at the MoH, told the Khaleej Times.

He said this step has been taken because the UAE is facing an acute shortage of nurses both in the private and public sectors.

"However, the problem is more acute in the private sector," he said.

Among other measures the government is planning to initiate to overcome this shortage is a reduction in the number of mandatory years of work experience required for taking up a nursing job in the UAE.

"We are planning to reduce it to two years," Ghaffor told the newspaper.

As of now, it is three years.
