Analysts found that a segment of heart rhythm, QT interval, was prolonged by 10 milliseconds in people who had just consumed one to three cans of energy drinks. This disturbance in the rhythm could cause irregular heartbeats leading to fatal heart problems.
Researchers also noticed that the systolic blood pressure was elevated by nearly 3.5 points due to energy drink consumption.
Authors caution that older people and those with health problems are more prone to heart problems by energy drinks.
The report was presented at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention conference.
