EMA to Investigate If Morning After Pill Works in Overweight Women
A couple of months after French pharmaceutical company HRA Pharma revealed that it will be adding labels on its emergency contraceptive pills warning that they were less effective in overweight women, the European Medicines Agency confirmed that it will be conducting an investigation to check whether they really work in overweight women.
The move comes after HRA Pharma revealed that studies have shown its drug, Norlevo, to be less effective in overweight women.

The EMA released a statement saying that their investigation will be including all EU products that come under the same category as Norlevo and whether they really is ‘cut-off threshold’ beyond which medicines become less effective.

Contraception journal published a study in 2011 which suggested that emergency contraceptive pills were three times more likely to not work in overweight and obese women compared to normal weight women and the risk was even higher if the pill contained levonorgestrel, rather than ulipristal acetate.
