Electronic Tattoo to Monitor Patients in Hospitals

A group of American scientists have developed a new “electronic tattoo” that could revolutionize the way patients are currently monitored in hospitals.

According to the report published in the journal Science, the device has been created by using wavy, snake-like components which mean that it can stretch or contract along with the skin. The device is fitted with solar cells which mean that it can be powered by energy from electromagnetic radiation.

The device can be worn for more than 24 hours without any skin irritation though researchers said that a new sensor needs to be attached every fortnight since the dead cells produced by the skin interferes with the device’s function.

“Our goal was to develop an electronic technology that could integrate with the skin in a way that is invisible to the user. It's a technology that blurs the distinction between electronics and biology”, University of Illinois’ John Rogers said.
