Electric Shock May Help Stop Incontinence

Incontinence or the inability to control urination, now has a remedy in electric shock, according to a new study.

Thanks to a team from North Middlesex University Hospital in Britain who have come out with a novel technique that can alleviate the symptoms of more than 70 per cent of women with an overactive bladder.

This technique called as percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation, is painless and involves the insertion of a small needle into the calf muscle to activate the tibial nerve . The needle is attached to a device which sends electrical pulses into the nerve.

Thirty minutes treatment was administered to 43 women with an average age of 55. These women had not met with any success with other forms of treatment. After six weeks of the treatment close to 70 per cent of them showed great improvement.

Further research revealed that treatment needs to be repeated frequently in regular intervals as some patients reported that their symptoms took a turn for the worse three weeks after the close of the first treatment.
