Efforts to Stem Suicide Rates Being Hindered by Cash Cuts in Scotland

by Rajashri on Aug 28 2008 4:31 PM

Dr Richard Simpson, the Labour's Holyrood health spokesman, today voiced concern over the increase in suicide rates in Scotland. It has been claimed that unnecessary cash cuts are hindering the drive to reduce the number of suicides in the country.

East Dunbartonshire, Highland, Angus, South Ayrshire and Scottish Borders councils have all experienced cuts between £50,000 and £224,000. This has resulted in a reduction in the "Choose Life" services to tackle suicide.

"These figures are deeply concerning. In the Highlands, which has one of the highest suicide rates in the UK, the local authority is cutting its funding to Choose Life by a third," said Dr Simpson.
