Eating Turkey Not Responsible for Drowsy Feeling After Thanksgiving

by Rajshri on Nov 27 2009 9:20 PM

If you feel you mood is down and you are better off sleeping after Thanksgiving, do not blame the turkey, say experts. Most likely you have gorged on food and are full and therefore feel drowsy.

Turkey meat contains tryptophan, a chemical that is converted into serotonin and melatonin in the human body. The former affects mood and sleep, while the latter is a well-known sleep altering hormone.

The belief over the years was that eating turkey increased the levels of these two chemicals in the body and hence accounted for drowsiness following a Thanksgiving feast.

So the best way to avoid a "holiday hangover" appears to be to eat small portions of whatever you like. Skinless turkey, without gravy may be a good choice.
