Eating Disorders Linked to Sex Hormone Changes During Puberty
Eating disorders during puberty could be directly related to changes in sex hormones, a new research carried out by Michigan State University reveals.
Researchers suggest that a type of estrogen hormone known as estradiol could be the main cause of eating disorders during puberty especially among girls. However they were unable to identify exactly how the hormone was responsible for the changes in eating habits.

“The reason we see an increase in genetic influences during puberty is that the genes for disordered eating are essentially getting switched on during that time. This research was trying to figure out what turns on the genes during puberty? And what we found is that increases in estradiol apparently are activating genetic risk for eating disorders”, lead researcher Kelly Klump said.

The study details are published in the journal Psychological Medicine.
