Eat Desserts to Ease Pain Caused Due to Overindulgence on Christmas
A sugary snack can ease the pain of a gut-busting feast, according to Norwegian researchers.
Dr Arnold Berstad, of Lovisenberg Diakonale Hospital in Oslo said, "A sweet taste can allow the stomach to hold more, and we can eat a little more without experiencing discomfort. The effects last long enough to influence the current meal but maybe not more."

Researchers said sugar appears to stimulate the vagus nerve, which controls digestion, speech, breathing and other functions. The tickled vagus nerve signals the stomach muscles to loosen up and allow a bit more food to fit in. Also, the looser stomach muscles lets the food already eaten settle comfortably. Sugary treat can relax the stomach so much that it does not feel full even when it really is.

Experts opined that this possibly explains why it is easier to overindulge when it comes to desserts.

The study is published in The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association.
