E-Prescription System Debuts in Scotland

by Rajashri on Jul 14 2009 10:12 PM

The electronic Acute Medication Service (eAMS) has debuted in Scotland in a first of its kind scenario where GP practices will have electronic links to community pharmacies.

The system will allow doctors to directly send the prescriptions to the pharmacies, thus reducing errors and also decreasing the paperwork involved in the process.

"We have a very successful prescribing system in Scotland, with around one million paper prescriptions written by GPs every week and dispensed in community pharmacies," said Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon. "But we can always do more and that's what eAMS will achieve."

Community Pharmacy Scotland chairman Martin Green also welcomed the initiative, saying the system will improve safety by "improving the communication of information between GP practices and community pharmacies."

Patients will still be given written slips, but these will have barcodes, which will be scanned at the pharmacies.
