The Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed an agreement with General Motors for the operation of 10 eco-friendly hybrid taxis in the city from January next year.
The agreement comes as a first step in a comprehensive plan by Dubai authorities to reduce emissions and to make all vehicles in the emirate eco-friendly, WAM news agency reported Friday.

From January, the RTA will start a one-year operational trial of 10 General Motors hybrid taxis -- five Chevrolet Tahoes and five Chevrolet Malibus.
The vehicles use dual-mode engines that run on both fuel and electricity.
Abdul Aziz Malik, CEO Dubai Taxi, said the hybrid taxis have vastly improved fuel economy over their petrol-driven counterparts.
Matar Al Tayer, chairman of RTA, noted that this step was set to pave the way for hybrid public buses and the RTA would gradually introduce hybrid taxis and buses in its fleet.
