Doctors Strike at Premier Orissa Hospital

Health services in Orissa's premier Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College here were paralysed Thursday as doctors struck work to protest an attack by some people after the death of a patient.

The junior doctors stopped work Wednesday night after a group of irate people attacked some of them and ransacked the casualty department.

Some youths had come to the casualty department from city's Rajabagicha area with a man who had pain in his head after consuming a cold drink, district police chief Soumendra Priyadarshi told IANS.

"The doctors on duty treated him with two injections and advised him to take rest at home. Subsequently, he complained unbearable pain in the head and was again brought to the hospital, where he was examined and declared dead.

"The group alleged that the youth died due to negligence of the attending doctors and attacked them," he said.

Priyadarshi said police had arrested eight youths for the attack and over two-dozen policemen were deployed in the hospital premises to maintain law and order.

The Orissa Medical Services Association (OSMA), meanwhile, called for a meeting Friday to access the situation and decide the future course of action.
