by Rajashri on Jul 18 2009 9:19 PM

Dr. Arun Sharma and his wife, Dr Kiran Sharma have been indicted by US federal authorities on charges to defraud Medicare, Medicaid and health insurance companies to the tune of $31 million.

The 29-count indictment in Houston says that the couple distributed 1.3 million hydrocodone tablets illegally and also filed claims for procedures that never took place. The couple ran the Allergy, Asthma, Arthritis and Pain Centers on Cole Street in Webster and on Garth Road in Baytown.

The indictment alleges that Dr Arum Sharma saw at least 70 patients a day and wrote hydrocodone prescriptions in exchange for cash. It has emerged that the couple prescribed 8,000 hydrocodone tablets to a single patient during the last eight months.

The doctors have been ordered to appear before court on August 3 for arraignment.
