Doctors Advised About Early Signs of Meningitis
The British Journal of General Practice has advised doctors to look for leg pain, confusion, neck pain and sensitivity to light as prominent symptoms of meningitis, while pale color, cold hands and headaches are not very reliable signs of meningitis. In 50% cases the classic rash, which is a clear symptom of meningitis appears in later stages of the disease, which increases the probability of patients with meningitis being misdiagnosed.
Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord, and can be caused by viral infection or bacterial infection. Scientists studied the early symptoms of the disease in about 1,600 children, aged 22 months to 6 years who visited doctors in Oxfordshire and Somerset.

The Chief Executive of Meningitis Research Foundation, Chris Head, said, "It's a significant step forward in the treatment of meningitis as early recognition of the disease will help in timely treatment."
