Doctor Who Suggested Link Between MMR Vaccinations and Autism Struck Off Register
Dr Andrew Wakefield, the first person to suggest a link between MMR vaccine and autism was struck off the medical register after the General Medical Council found him guilty of serious professional misconduct.
In 1998, Dr Wakefield's controversial paper in The Lancet finding a purported link between MMR vaccines and increase of autism in kids caused a massive slump in vaccination rates leading to a consequent rise in measles. However the paper was later found to be erroneous.

The GMC had ruled earlier this year that Dr Wakefield acted unethically in the way he conducted his research.

Dr Surendra Kumar, the GMC panel's chairman, said, "The panel concluded that it is the only sanction that is appropriate to protect patients and is in the wider public interest, including the maintenance of public trust and confidence in the profession, and is proportionate to the serious and wide-ranging findings made against him."

Dr Wakefield, currently based in the US, has called these findings unjust.
