A court in Haryana's Rohtak city has convicted a doctor for illegally conducting a sex determination test of a foetus in violation of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act.

Haryana's Health Minister Kartar Devi, disclosing this Saturday, said that the doctor, S.N. Dhanvantri, has been sentenced to one year's imprisonment and to pay fine of Rs.5,000.

The minister said this was the second conviction of a doctor in Haryana for illegally conducting the test to determine the sex of the unborn child.

Haryana has one of the lowest sex ratios, just over 800 females for 1,000 males, in the country mainly because families prefer to have a male child.

The minister said the first conviction of a doctor in the country for sex determination test was also in Haryana in 2005.

The doctor, Anil Sabhani and his technician Kartar Singh were sentenced to two year's imprisonment in Palwal town of Faridabad district.

She said that two more cases of violation of the Act have been registered against doctors Surinder Yadav of Gurgaon and S.N. Indora of Faridabad recently.

She said that health officials were keeping a strict watch on doctors and ultrasound clinics to curb any incidence of sex determination tests.
