Docs Cleared of Medical Negligence After 22 Years
After being under suspicion for more than two decades over a medical negligence case, two Mumbai based doctors were finally cleared of any culpability over the death of a patient back in 1987.
Dr AK Mukherjee and Dr Prafulla B Desai had conducted a surgery on Leela Singhi who was suffering from a cervical cancer even after a New York based oncologist suggested that the condition was inoperable.

After she passed away on September 7, 1988, her husband, Padam Chand Singhi filed a complaint against Dr Desai alleging negligence with the Maharashtra Director General of Police. The Mumbai police finally registered an FIR after Maharashtra Medical Council held Dr Desai guilty for breach of medical ethics in 1991 but Dr Mukherjee was also booked even though Singhi wanted him to appear as witness.

Confirming that the Esplanade magistrate court has found both the doctors innocent, Singhi said “Acting on an application filed by state government, the Esplanade magistrate court discharged the cancer specialist saying there was nothing implicating him in the case.”
