Disabled Can Now Control A Computer With Their Eyes?

Under the supervision of an Indian-origin scientist, a Khalifa university computer engineering student has developed a software that will allow people to control the mouse on a laptop or desktop computer through the movement of their eyes.

The invention may help people with physical disabilities to become fully functional on a personal computer or laptop.

Miniature Horses Help the Disabled
New federal guidelines by the U.S. Department of Justice for the Americans with Disabilities Act permits, besides dogs as service animals, miniature horses too, to assist the disabled.

Sultan Ahmad Sultan Al Sharif developed the software called the 'Virtual Mouse: Human Eye based Mouse Control' as part of his final year project to assist those with special needs under the supervision of Harish Bhaskar, assistant professor of computer engineering at KU, and Yousuf Iraqi.

"This project is aimed at everyone but specifically for those who have a physical disability," Al Sharif told the Gulf News.

"People who can't use their hands or move their bodies can now use our system to control an on-screen mouse with their eye," he said.

A new report drafted by the Productivity Commission has suggested that people with severe disability should be given lifelong support and care in Australia.

Al Sharif added the control happens because a person's eye movements are followed by a laptop's embedded camera (or a desktop computer's camera) to move the on-screen mouse.

"To perform a click function you close one eye; either the left or right to perform a left or right click. If both eyes are closed the computer is sent into sleep mode," he said.

Mentally Disabled Teen With Harness
The Dutch government on Thursday defended the physical restraint of mentally disabled patients in the midst of a public outcry over a teenager reportedly harnessed to a wall daily since 2007.

Al Sharif and his supervisors are currently in the process of patenting the software.
