Diabetic Patients Need Proper Foot Care

Pointing out the necessity for diabetic patients to cover their wounds and areas affected by neuropathy, a new study published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association cites a three year old case where in a pet Jack Russell terrier chewed off its owner’s foot. The Iowa resident suffering from diabetic related neuropathy in her foot woke up to find that her dog had chewed off her foot and there was blood everywhere in the room.

Valley Presbyterian Hospital ‘s Dr Lee Rogers, who revealed that he was forced to amputate the leg, said that the case underlines the need for patients to cover their feet and wounds while sleeping.

“Pets have a tendency to lick wounds, and that simple lick can turn into a bite, if there is no response from the owner”, he said and revealed that it was the second such case to be printed in medical literature though such incidents are more common and have been reported in the media.
