Diabetes Management Tips To Follow From This World Health Day
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that diabetes is currently one of the biggest health concerns of the world. Thus, the theme of this year’s World Health Day is Prevent, Treat, Beat diabetes.
The number of diabetes cases is increasing rapidly, particularly in low-and-middle-income groups and developing countries. India has more diabetics than any other nation in the world, according to statistics from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). One in seven births is affected by gestational diabetes. A person dies from diabetes every 6 seconds. These statistics indicate the need to take preventive measure to reduce the risks of diabetes.

Diabetes is treatable and can be monitored and managed to avoid complications. Here are a few tips to prevent and manage diabetes:

  • Regular Home Monitoring: It is important for people with diabetes to keep a track of their blood sugar level with regular home monitoring using blood glucose monitor.
  • Healthy Diet: A healthy diet should include beans, whole grains, citrus fruits, green tea, fenugreek, Jamun seeds, olives, and also foods rich in Omega 3 and vitamin C.
  • Breakfast is Important: Never skip breakfast as it is the important meal of the day. Breakfast helps reduce appetite and control calorie consumption.
  • Water: Drinking adequate amount of water helps mobilize the sugar content in the blood and regulates proper functioning of the body.
  • Physical Exercise: Daily exercise helps to maintain a healthy weight and lowers blood sugar level to boosts sensitivity towards insulin.
  • Sleep Well: It is very important to have at least six hours of good night sleep. Lack of sleep can increase cortisol hormone level and leads to a rise in insulin level.
  • Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Alcohol consumption should be in moderation. Alcohol increases risk of low blood glucose (hypoglycemia), so it is safest to consume alcohol with a meal that includes carbohydrate-rich food.
