Diabetes Increases Risk of Premature Death
People who suffer from diabetes are at a greater risk of dying prematurely compared to those without the disease, a new report published in the New England Journal of Medicine reveals.
Researchers from the University of Miami and University of Cambridge studied nearly 821,000 people who took part in 97 different studies. The researchers found that over 123,000 people died during the study periods and those suffering from diabetes were at a 80 percent higher risk of dying due to any cause compared to those without the disease.

Moreover the risk of dying from a form of cancer increased by 25 percent among diabetics along with cardiovascular diseases, liver and kidney disease or any infectious disease. Diabetics also had a 64 percent higher risk of dying from mental disorders while the risk of dying from suicides was found to be 58 percent.

“In addition to vascular disease, diabetes is associated with substantial premature death from several cancers, infectious diseases, external causes, intentional self-harm and degenerative disorders, independent of major risk factors. These findings highlight the need to better understand and prevent the multi-system consequences of diabetes”, the researchers wrote.
