Despite Ban, Gutka Is Still Available In Karnataka
Gutka may have been banned in Karnataka but it is still available in the state. Instead of selling the mixture in a single packet, manufacturers are selling in twin packs- pan masala and tobacco are being sold separately. This has been found by a study that examined the ban’s impact in select areas.
Institute of Global Tobacco Control (part of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health) and the World Health Organization’s country office for India conducted the study around 157 users and 62 retailers were questioned in Bengaluru and Mangaluru; 60 shops were surveyed.

Reports reveal over 90% of the retailers who were questioned said the government should ban the manufacturing of tobacco products. It was found that none of the vendors were found to consume gutka in Bihar Karnataka and Maharashtra.

In May 2013 gutka was banned in Karnataka making it the 23rd state in India to do so.
