Dementia Care may Cost £750 Million Extra

A new report compiled by Alzheimer's Society has warned that the taxpayers could be burdened by more than £750 million worth of preventable expense unless care for dementia patients is not improved soon. According to the report, more than 50,000 people suffering from dementia could be forced to go into care homes due to inadequate care which could in turn mean that the government will have to put up with an annual expense of more than £750 million.

Alzheimer’s Society came down heavily on the quality of the care provided to dementia patients and cited cases of malnutrition, unchanged incontinence pads and patients left bed ridden. It also said that home care workers are also suffering due to stress as they struggle to look after their loved ones without any professional help.

“It is an absolute travesty that so many people with dementia are being forced to struggle without the care and support they need. The consequences of this represent an unacceptable human and financial cost”, Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of Alzheimer's Society, said.
