AIIMS has been give five days time by the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) to explain the death of a patient who was being operated at the hospital by a Japanese surgeon as part of a live surgery workshop. "Take notice that in default of your failing to submit your statement of defence within the stipulated time, it shall be presumed that you have nothing to say in the matter and the DMC shall be free to initiate appropriate action," stated the notification. DMC has asked AIIMS to furnish copies of medical records pertaining to the treatment administered to the patient, registration details of the doctors who conducted the surgery and the permission given to the foreign faculty to operate. Live surgery workshop was organized as part of the 23rd annual conference of the Indian National Association for study of the liver on July 31, hosted by AIIMS and the Army Research & Referral Hospital, New Delhi. Over a hundred surgeons watched as Dr Goro Honda, from Japan's Tokyo Metropolitan Cancer and Infectious Diseases Center, performed a laparoscopic liver resection at AIIMS. The deceased was a 62-year-old Shobha Ram, who suffered massive bleeding during the procedure. It has been claimed that despite suggestions that the team resort to an open surgery, doctors continued with the laparoscopic technique, relenting only after seven hours of surgery. The live video was then terminated and the patient was shifted to the intensive care unit, where he died 90 minutes later.Source: Medindia << Virtual Incision Develops Smaller Robots for Minimally Inva...
