Delhi High Court Allows Interim Stay on Ban of Drugs
On March 10, Union Health Ministry has announced a ban on 355 fixed dose combination drugs in India. Some of the popular drugs include cough syrups like D'Cold, Phensedyl, Benadryl and Corex, Nimesulide and Vicks Action 500 Extra.
The ban was issued to curb the misuse of medicines in the country. Now, about 30 leading pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer, Glenmark and Cipla have filed petitions against the government’s ban. Therefore, the Delhi High Court has announced that it will grant an interim stay on the drug ban till March 28.

This move has offered a breathing relief for drugs manufactured by major pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer’s Corex cough syrup, Glaxo’s Piriton expectorant, P&G’s Vicks Action 500 extra, Reckitt’s D’Cold, Piramal’s Saridon, Glenmark’s Ascoril and Alex cough syrups, Abbott’s Phensedyl cough syrup and Alembic’s Glycodin cough syrup.

In their pleas, the companies have stated that the ban on drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules was issued without giving any show-cause notification or granting them a hearing. Therefore, the court has decided to hear their pleas on March 28.
