Debate on Frozen “Orphans” in Canada
The “leftover” embryos of couples who have successful IVF treatment are now under the scanner as it has emerged that fertility clinics have thousands of such orphan embryos.
Clinics are mulling on whether to match these embryos for childless couples, who are infertile, Globe and Mail reported. The debate is on because these embryos can survive for almost a decade in suspended animation.

Some options of managing the embryos include using them in research, discarding them or store them indefinitely. The ethics of the situation is disturbing.

Experts have stated that it could that third-party procreation could be a future option. For now though, the clinics as well as the embryos are in a catch-22 situation.
