Death of the Gandhian Who Fasted for 21 Days

by Rajashri on Sep 5 2009 11:47 PM

Dr Dwarkadas Joshi, a staunch Gandhian and an eye surgeon, died on Friday after undertaking a fast unto death.

Dr Joshi had started on his fast after he broke his leg on August 15. Dr Joshi, who idolized Vinoba Bhave, told his family that he wanted to die in the same way.

His last rites were performed at Vadnagar, while the Gujarat government gave him a guard of honor.  Dr Joshi's team performed surgeries on nearly 4 lakh people at eyes camps in the district. He had left his practice in Kalbadevi in the 1940s after Gandhi and Bhave advised him to serve people in his town.
