Dearth of Home Dialysis in South Australia

by Rajshri on Feb 27 2010 11:09 PM

Kidney Health Australia has revealed that kidney disease patients in South Australia are left in the lurch due to the unavailability of home dialysis.

The organization wants an increase in home dialysis regimens so that patients can avoid long travels to receive dialysis treatment at hospitals. The need is very clear as data shows that just 8 out of 10,062 Australians receiving dialysis treatment are getting home dialysis.

“SA is being left behind while other states build on this treatment,” said Kidney Health Australia medical director Dr Tim Mathew. “Better results through more frequent dialysis can only be sensibly done at home, and with long-term treatment, patients can do their own thing in their own time.”

The State government is looking to fund rural dialysis units, but Dr Matthews says this is not so ideal.
