Dark Chocolate is a Stress Buster

by Rajshri on Nov 12 2009 9:46 PM

A new study by Sunil Kochhar and his team has found that dark chocolate can be a powerful stress buster. The study said that an ounce and a half of dark chocolate a day for two weeks might reduce the levels of stress hormones in the body.

"The study provides strong evidence that a daily consumption of 40 grams [1.4 ounces] during a period of 2 weeks is sufficient to modify the metabolism of healthy human volunteers," the researchers wrote.

Volunteers who were highly stressed were asked to eat dark chocolate for two weeks. The researchers focused on antioxidants and other beneficial substances in dark chocolate that help reduce the risk of heart disease and found that these volunteers had significant reductions in stress hormones after 15 days.

The details appear online in ACS’ Journal of Proteome Research.
