Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Raises Suicidal Thoughts in a 35-Year-Old Woman
Sherrie Duggan, a 35-year-old woman was suffering from severe nausea and stomach pain. She was vomiting 15 times an hour and did not know the exact reason for her illness.
Initially she thought it was due to a stomach bug and did not visit a doctor. She was insulin-dependent diabetic and her main concern was getting enough sugar.

One day in August 2014, she had uncontrolled vomiting which made her fall into diabetic coma. She was immediately rushed to Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

After conducting several tests, she was diagnosed with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS). A condition that brings on severe episodes of sickness that can last between three days and four weeks.

“Others thought it was a problem with my gall bladder, or gastroparesis – a rare stomach condition. When I finally got the Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome diagnosis it was bittersweet. They hadn’t found cancer, which had been a worry, but there isn’t an answer either – because there is no cure for CVS. It was a process of elimination because there is no test,” said Duggan.

At one stage, the disorder put her into a deep depression where she had suicidal thoughts. She wanted to end her life just to make the vicious cycle stop.

With treatment from anti-nausea medication usually given to chemotherapy patients, Sherrie has managed to keep attacks at bay for the past four months.
