Cuba to Highlight Volunteers' Efforts on AIDS Day

Cuba will launch a campaign on the World AIDS Day December 1 to highlight the work of volunteers and social activists in the prevention of the scourge.

Gloria Pausada, a specialist working with the AIDS prevention and control programme, said the volunteer movement on the island country, grew through participation of patients themselves, who spent part of their time visiting workplaces, schools and other institutions to increase public awareness about AIDS.

Students, workers and housewives joined them later and the country currently boasts of thousands of promoters and advisers in HIV prevention.

"Motivations behind the work of these volunteers include human values, altruism, solidarity, personal risk situations and the HIV impact on friends, partners and families," said Pausada in a press conference Monday, adding that activities in the national programme will be stepped up on December 1.
