Crops Enhanced With Omega-3 Fatty Acids on the Anvil

Indian researchers are on the brink of growing crops enhanced with omega-3 fatty acids even as awareness about nutrition spreads in the society.

"To increase yields and enhance nutrition, improved rice varieties which have in-built insect protection, and are fortified with high iron and zinc are being developed in India," agricultural-biotechnology experts said in a statement.

Researchers at Interactive Research School for Health Affairs (IRSHA) of Bharathi Vidyapeeth University are also hoping to grow seeds with omega-3 fatty acid so as to produce crops that contain the nutrients.

"Our young growing nation needs more food, and yet demands more healthy food. Indian agriculture and plant research aims to provide more nutrition while eating less food," P Ranjekar, Director of Research, Bharati Vidyapeeth University said.
