Court Allows Payment for Donors of Stem Cells

It may now be easier for patients to find donors of stem cells especially after a recent ruling by the Federal Court has allowed payment for such donors. The court has clarified that the federal law which disallowed payment for donated organs did not include stem cells extracted from blood.  

“The statute does not prohibit compensation for donations of blood and the substances in it, which include peripheral blood stem cells,” Judge Andrew J. Kleinfeld said.

Compensation will now be allowed in the western states coming under the Ninth Circuit.
