Two women, who were stuck in a lift, for two days, were saved by two bottles of cough drops and six aspirins.

Beata Bartoszewicz and her mother Roma Borowski, who were trapped inside a broken lift in Illinois for two days, survived on two cough drops and six aspirins until they were rescued.

The two cleaning ladies had entered the lift on 22 December in an empty building in a Chicago suburb. But after the doors closed, they found that they were stuck on the first floor of the two-storey building.

According to Bartoszewicz, the two had tried the emergency alarm, but received no response.

She added that their numerous attempts to try open the doors also failed.

The building was due to remain closed until after Christmas, and neither had a mobile phone or water.

The women started becoming dizzy from hunger and thirst, however, they managed to keep themselves conscious by consuming cough drops and aspirins.

"I was close to thinking I was going to die," the Scotsman quoted Bartoszewicz, as saying.

She added that her mother kept reassuring her continuously.

"She kept saying, 'We're going to be OK, and we're going to spend Christmas Eve at home'," she said.

Two days later, on Christmas Eve, an employee of the building happened to go to work.

Borowski said the moment she heard him talking on his phone, she and daughter yelled for his attention.

Fire crews freed the women an hour later.
