Cosmopolitan Launches Campaign to Increase Awareness About Eating Disorders
Leading international women’s magazine Cosmopolitan has launched a new campaign ahead of Eating Disorders Awareness Week in an attempt to make GPs take eating disorders more seriously.
The magazine, which is the media partner for eating disorder charity Beat, hopes that the campaign will make doctors review about how they assess the illness, and said that some women are waiting for two or more years to receive any kind of treatment for the disorder, with many of them refused treatment as the doctors believe that they are not ill enough.

The magazine has also published an open letter on its website and is encouraging people to print it out and send it to their GPs.

“EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified) sufferers aren’t just being ‘a bit funny about food’, they are seriously ill. The NHS is amazing in so many ways, but at the same time, it’s failing so many women (and men) who desperately need help now, not in a year’s time. We’re therefore urging GPs to move away from the ethos of merely ticking boxes when it comes to assessing eating disorders. It’s time to take a stand and help all these thousands of women who are suffering; a lot of them in silence”, Cosmopolitan’s editor-in-chief Louise Court said.
