Cop-biter Truly HIV Positive

A man who viciously bit an Atlanta police officer and claimed he was HIV positive, during an arrest on Saturday has tested positive for HIV, police said.

In the early hours of Saturday, Ross Deadwyler, 41, drove on at full speed when a police officer wanted him to pull over for driving with a broken headlight.

Additional Georgia State Patrol officers picked up the chase and stopped Deadwyler on Sylvan Road. In the struggle that followed, Deadwyler bit  a large chunk of skin off the the Atlanta officer’s arm  as the officer reached into the car to shut off the ignition, police said. Deadwyler told the police he was HIV postive.

Atlanta police spokesman Ron Campbell would not disclose the identity of the officer who was bitten, but said the officer is at home and taking medication for 30 days. Campbell said he did not know the name or purpose of the medication.

Deadwyler is currently at Grady Memorial Hospital, from where he will be taken to Fulton County Jail. Authorities have charged him with two counts each of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and speeding to elude, in addition to one count each of felony, obstruction and improper equipment.
