In its quest to vanquish the big time killer AIDS/ HIV infection worldwide Center for AIDS Research at Case Medical Center spearheaded by Dr Benigno Rodriguez M.D and his extensive team of experts on AIDS/HIV in the U. S. have presented their latest findings in the current issue of Journal Of American Medical Association. Current therapeutic guidelines have been questioned by the latest findings, which contest that the measurement of HIV particles in the blood does not necessarily assess patient’s capability to resist the disease. The current study reiterates the amount of HIV particles (referred to as “viral load” in medical terminology) is not solely to be banked on to assess the rate at which the much valued CD4 cells essential to fight the infection is depleted from the body as a sequel to infection as previously understood.
CD4 cells are white blood cells in the human body, which has a defensive role against invading infection-causing agents. When these cells come under the attack of Human Immunodeficiency Virus, their numbers decline. Following this the symptoms associated with AIDS become more pronounced. The study conducted elucidates that the viral load could account for only 5% of variations in CD4 loss from patient to patient. Therefore it was concluded that the viral load couldn’t be held as sole culprit responsible for bringing down the CD4 count.Source-Eurekalert
