Concern Over Child Health Services in Scotland

by Rajashri on Jun 23 2009 7:55 PM

Holyrood's health committee has said that the child health services in the country are being neglected by those in charge of providing the same.

The committee said that child care was not a priority of policy makers and said children under five years of age were being neglected. The cross-party health committee made these observations even as ministers said 2 million pounds was being poured into child health services.

"Despite the commitment of the Scottish Government and previous Scottish ministers at a policy level, the existence of an agreed framework and the devotion, good work and admirable efforts of many individuals across the field, mental health and well-being seems not to have been a priority among those responsible for delivering the policy," the committee's report said.

Nationalist MSP Christine Grahame said child mental health services have been "a Cinderella service for many years." The government said it was taking the issue seriously and would invest an additional 6.5 million pounds over three years to obtain specialists on the staff.
