A public accounts committee has blasted the complex benefits system given to people who care for ill relatives or friends.

The report says that the way money is distributed to these carers is unnecessarily complicated. "Carers who apply for benefits should not have to wade through official written guidance and communications which can range from the hard to understand to the downright incomprehensible," PAC chairman Edward Leigh said. "And they should not have to be jumping through unnecessary hoops to apply for benefits and allowances."

Latest figures estimate that there are six million unpaid carers in the United Kingdom out of which a fifth forgo benefits available to them simply because the application process is very complicated.
