Communication and Education May Help People to Understand Autism Better
Autism society received a complaint letter over the behavior of a autistic child. Ryan, a 12-year-old who belongs to the Downey family of Kippens has autism. His parents were shocked about the letter sent to the society by the neighbors about their son’s behavior.
Scott Crocker, Executive Director of the Autism Society said that instead of writing a letter, neighbors could have directly communicated about this with the boy’s family.

He stated that communication and education are the key in helping to address some of the misunderstanding surrounding autism. It's important to talk and ask to gain a better understanding about autism.

In Kippens there are no services that can support children with autism. Therefore for many families, life has become challenging.

Scott Crocker said that the Autism Society is launching a campaign this fall to draw political attention on issues concerned to families affected by autism.

“Downey's experience highlights the need for greater understanding. There's still work to be done and we will look to focus programs in various communities for people who don't have autism in their immediate or extended families,” he added.
