Combination Drug Therapy More Effective for Kala-azar Treatment
Combination treatments for Kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis) have proved to be more effective and safe than the standard treatment, says a new study in the online edition of The Lancet.
According to the study combination treatment for visceral leishmaniasis reduces the duration of therapy, thereby encouraging adherence and reducing the emergence of drug-resistant parasites.

In the study that was conducted between June 2008 and July 2009, researchers studied 630 patients and compared standard treatment with amphotericin-b infusion with the 3 drug combinations in two different hospitals in Bihar. The results showed that combination therapy proved to be more effective.
