Official figures provided by the National Treatment Agency show that while use of heroin or crack has come down in young people, use of cocaine is on the rise.
Between 2005-08, the number of 18 to 24-year-olds seeking treatment for heroin addiction reduced by 22% to 9,632, while the number of people seeking treatment for cocaine addiction rose two-thirds to 2,692.

"Fewer people using heroin is good news as heroin is the most dangerous of all the drugs that people use. Given it involves a significant risk of overdose, HIV and hepatitis C - and is associated with acquisitive crime - I'm convinced that individuals, communities and wider society will benefit, especially the poorest communities which heroin affects most," he added.
However he also expressed concern over the rising number of cocaine abuse cases and said youngsters could damage their health with the reckless use of cocaine.
