There is no stopping teachers' brutality towards their students in India. A Class V student at a school in Kolkata, capital of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, has complained of hearing trouble after a tutor beat her with a ruler Saturday afternoon. The tutor, Krishna Gupta, is a teacher at the same school.
The incident took place at Gupta's coaching centre. Gupta flew into a rage without any apparent reason and began scolding Neha (10) and insulting her family. To the horror of the other students, she then lashed out at Neha with a wooden ruler. "The blows landed on my hands, back, shoulder and face," recalled the traumatised girl.

The bruises on her face confirmed the use of force. On returning home, she felt a searing pain in her left ear and had difficulty hearing. Her mother Mahua took her to a doctor, who confirmed she had sustained an injury in the ear.
The girl was taken to a doctor after her father, a West Bengal Police sub-inspector, filed a complaint at Gariahat police station. The cops lodged an assault case against Gupta, who could not be contacted.

Various draft guidelines are being prepared by a high-level committee set up by Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Renuka Chowdhury.
Though it is not known why Gupta turned violent, Neha's mother believes it could stem from an altercation the tutor had with Neha's grandfather Debendranath Chakraborty a week ago over the girl's progress.
Chakraborty had arranged for Neha to study at Gupta's coaching centre since July. Though Gupta had held nine examinations since, Neha's family had neither seen the answer scripts nor been told how she had fared.
The incident comes just two days after Education Minister Partha De announced a ban on any form of punishment by teachers that could make students feel threatened.
In a similar incident on Saturday, parents of students at Narayanpur High School in Bhangor staged an agitation after the headmaster severely beat up two 17-year-old boys.
